Who was Saint Andrew?...
We are first introduced to Andrew in the book of John. He was the first to spread the good news of the Messiah to others. He never appeared to live for his own glory, but only for the glory of God in Jesus. In 750 A.D. Andrew became the Patron Saint of Scotland. ...and what of his cross? In the way he died he did not put himself on an equal basis with the Messiah. He felt unworthy to be crucified in the same way as his Lord. Because of this belief, his symbol is the distinctive X-shaped cross. The white cross of his martyrdom was Scotland's contribution to the Union Jack Flag. It is also the central feature of the regimental crests of 'The Black Watch' & 'The Royal Scots'. |
